From the Serbu Firearms, Inc. Facebook page:

I feel bad because I’d love to get my rifle into as many police departments as possible…who doesn’t want their law enforcement agencies armed with the best possible tools to take out the bad guys? I heard a rumor that the only other company with a .50 BMG semi-auto rifle in production won’t sell to NY police agencies either. So because of a stupid law the venerable NYPD won’t have the best tools for the job….

XXXX,
Yes, I got the message and tried to return the call but got no answer. I appreciate your interest in our BFG-50A; I’m sure it would be an excellent addition to your department’s arsenal. Unfortunately, we have a policy of selling to state law enforcement agencies only what is allowed to be sold to private citizens in that state. Since the passage of the NY SAFE act, the BFG-50A is considered an assault weapon and as such is no longer available to private citizens in the state of New York. Therefore we have to respectfully decline to supply your department with BFG-50A rifles.

Regards,
Mark Serbu

  1. Hard to imagine a police department needing a .50 caliber rifle. Given the poor shooting performance of the NYPD, if I’m ever in trouble in NYC, for God’s sake, don’t call the cops!

    1. Lol yes. The last people I trust with this kind of weapon is the NYPD. At least when a regular citizen uses it to harm someone they take responsibility or get in trouble for it rather than the NYPD who will always get off. Cops with these sort of weapons? No thanks. Makes me feel even less safe

  2. About the only reason that I would ever be in New York Or Los Angles or Chicago, would be that is where the aliens left me after the abduction

  3. Folks, be careful with that “need” argument. That’s the antis argument.
Cops are people too, right? Well don’t fall into the trap!

When you adopt the “need” argument antis are winning its like submitting to 30 rounders being called “high capacity” instead of standard capacity mags.
It’s like adopting “assault rifle” terminology.

If you play the need card then they will say the “compromise” is nobody but military “needs” the high power rifle in 50 cal.

If a department wants to 50 up then they can. Same as a Citizen.
It’s smarter IMHO to reject their terminology and arguments. LEO wants 50s because they are effective firearms. Heck, that’s my dream firearm! I want one too.
    Remember, it’s WANT, not “need”.

    1. You are right, we do need to be careful what words we use so they are not used against us.
      Thank you for the reminder!

    2. I agree to a point. Remember, those weapons are being bought with our taxes. When you use my money, you don’t get to buy whatever you want, just because you want it. It becomes an as-needed basis. When I use my money, I can buy what I want — because it’s the money that I gained through my hard work, I’ve earned that right.

    3. The people do not have to explain ‘need’ of anything to anyone.

The Police, Using our money to buy such arms in service to the people, Do.

    4. The constitution does not state a need or a right of a government agency or agents, local or federal, to be armed.

It does however put credence on the general citizenry to be armed.

    5. I would also caution making the decision about what police departments “need”. There are situations where police are asked to counter military threats that require military equipment. It’s not infeasible that the NYPD (especially thier SWAT team) might require an anti-armor capability. I’d rather they have it and never need it than need it and never have it. That said… I don’t see them buying a lot of these.

    6. I don’t see them buying *any* of these, not until state law is changed.

      And I’m okay with that.

  4. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. It’s not like police need strategic weapon systems like artillery, so I see no reason that something too dangerous for a perfectly law-abiding citizen should be suitable for law enforcement.

  5. Good for Serbu.
I too wonder why any police department needs an autolading .50 cal?
This will disable cars and trucks, not just kill someone.
I think that the cops like to play Rambo from time to time.
Funny thing, they could just buy a Remington 700 and be equipped as well as the Marines or SEALS.

  6. Everyone forgets that our country was attacked and is under constant attack since 1993 and 9/11. When the s–t hits the fan and these maniacs come out of the woodwork with assault weapons, RPG’s etc, are the police going to fight back with .38’s? 9mm Glocks? Please…it is about preparedness. Unreal….

    1. No, dips**t.

The terrorists are our own Governments and PD. It’s about control. Al-Ciada…you really think that it’s them we have to worry about? I’d worry more about DHS.

Have you ever been to NYC? I live 30 mins away.

    2. How about we just don’t let the terrorists in?

It’s not hard to tell who might be a Arab Muslim terrorist. Start with the first two words of the phrase…

  7. Thank you Mr. Serbu!
Its very appreciated and admired by us surfs here in ny, that you would put your money on the line for a principle.

  8. No to you Dips..t
Gbshore is right. I guess u don’t remember the 3000+ Americans killed on 9/11,or the attack in 1993 with more Americans killed. I guess you also don’t remember the recent car bomb attempt in Times Square and the 100’s of other attempts that were quitely prevented before they ever happened. And you are more worried about the PD? What a joke.
I’m glad you only live 30 miles away, this way in the event, God forbid, there is another incident we can all rely on YOU to protect us. Or will you be running the other way?….

    1. hahah do you mean that 1993 incident where the FBI facilitated both the aquirement AND placement of explosives under the WTC?

Stfu you fucking idiot, stop shouting “terrorist” like the scared little pussy that you are, he who sacrifices freedom in the name of security deserves neither.

    2. Yes, because all of those terrorists who went about their acts, without being walked along it by the FBI, were stopped by… not the police.

    3. And you figure NYPD with a .50 BMG is gonna be just the thing? –I betcha they don’t.

Look up the difference between “terrorism” and “open warfare;” the days of “toe-to-toe with the Russkis” are long over.

    4. Yes, the NYPD needs a .50 so that they can threaten INS to make them stop letting terrorists in.

Or maybe, fix the problem where terrorists are being let in.

  9. Never refer to a “patrol rifle” as an assault weapon…!!! The rifle that everyone carries is called a patrol rifle….Amazing how the propagandist try to stir everyone up with terminology…Law enforcement refers to it as that and although retired now, I will always refer to an AR-15 or “platform type rifle” as such…My shotgun was always called a “riot gun” and now most people call them patrol shotguns….Some things should never change…
I definitely see utility in a .338 Lapuna and or .50BMG for tactical applications…Amen….

  10. I don’t think the single shot .50 is illegal in NY since its a bolt action. It has no magazine, no forend hand grip…am I wrong? Please inform…

    1. It’s a semiauto and has both a pistol grip and a muzzle brake, either of which make it an “assault weapon” under the SAFE Act.Of course it was an “assault weapon” before the new law.

  11. that’s one for “GOOD GUYS” and “ZERO” for the liberal progressives!…
    woooooohoooooo!!!!!!…..yeah baby!!!!!!…..

  12. Could you imagine those “citiods” using the 50a in N.Y.C.! How many buildings & innocent civilians would be hit by the misses of N.Y.P.D. Imagine a 50A mounted in a N.Y.P.D. chopper. Bad enough stray bullets on the ground! Thank you for “blocking” the sale of the 50A to N.Y.P.D.,afterall the mayor attempted to block the sale of large sugarry drinks, who would sell to a guy who blocks the drinks but jepardizes public safety with a 50A in the hands of NYC cops!

  13. Assault rifle = real accepted terminology
Assault weapon = term made up by liberals for their anti gun agenda.

  14. Thank you for your support and standing against Unconstitutional Tyranny I always pass on and share info like this from companies with a special note for others to promote and give a little extra FREE Advertisement for strong moral standing.

  15. All I can say is a Profound and Deep “Thank You”!! I pray that other Firearm Corporations follow yours and others lead.

  16. i agree they dont need a 50 in the city too funny and serbu thanks for saying no to cops they dont support t he safe act but also are punished by it so guys in blue get with the program time for you to take a step and forma sit out or something to be taken seriously we dont think your serious and feel your nothing more than thoughtless puppets who support your gov. or mayor when you know there being unfair and most of all unconstitutional bet that would get their attn:

  17. Thank you for not selling to them. I agree… WHAT THE HELL does a policeman need with a .50 cal???? Killing engine blocks these days? … I know some officers and some of them are lousy shots compared with my civilian friends… I don’t think they need this AND if citizens can’t buy them then neither should they!! Once again my thanks to you Sir.

  18. Thank you, Sir. Very impressed to see a company stand by their principles. You have earned my respect and I would gladly do business with your company.
I will stand with you and with those companies that takes a stand against government tyranny. I’m glad to see more companies coming around but I wish ammunition manufacturers would come around as well.
They need to be part of this fight.

  19. I’m wondering how many of the new yorkers were racing to the towers that day, oh wait that’s right the citizens were to busy running away from the buildings while police and fire were running in and you have the balls to question and cheer when police get denied requested equipment.. But I’m sure none of call the police and handle all emergencies yourselfs too.. Pathetic
