If you had any doubt before, the White House made it clear earlier this week that President Trump will not sign any of the gun control measures promoted by Democrats in Congress. The White House says the two main bills under consideration remain "incompatible with the Second Amendment’s guarantee of an individual right to keep arms."

HR 8 would ban the private sale of firearms in America. HR 1112 would impose as much as a 20-day waiting period before picking up a new firearm.  At The Truth About Guns, we've written about the potential of the ban on private sales (otherwise known as universal background checks) previously. Luis Valdes worried that it would pass into law.  I expressed skepticism that it would make it to Trump's desk.

The White House made it clear today that President Donald Trump will veto the measure if it gets that far.

From The Hill:

The White House on Monday issued a statement warning that President Trump would veto proposed legislation to enhance background checks for gun purchases if it passes the House and Senate.

The legislation in question, H.R. 8 and H.R. 1112, would require universal background checks and close a so-called Charleston loophole that the shooter used in the 2015 massacre at a historic black church to buy a gun. One of the measures is a bipartisan bill, co-sponsored by Reps. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) and Pete King (R-N.Y.).

Both bills are expected to pass the House along party lines with limited support from Republicans when they vote on it this week. If the bills pass in the House, they would still need to be sent to the Republican-controlled Senate for approval before reaching Trump.

The White House announced it opposed the bills for violating Second Amendment rights.

"The extensive regulation required by H.R. 8 is incompatible with the Second Amendment’s guarantee of an individual right to keep arms," the statement reads. "By overly extending the minimum time that a licensed entity is required to wait for background check results, H.R. 1112 would unduly impose burdensome delays on individuals seeking to purchase a firearm."

Even CNN, hardly a subsidiary of the National Rifle Association, admits that "Universal Background Checks" would not stop recent mass public shootings in America in their story "Would background checks have stopped recent mass shootings? Probably not."

In that story, former NRA President David Keene summed it up nicely:

"The tipping point for all this gun control talk about background checks is actually an example of how background checks don't matter… [the] killer will find a way to get a gun even if he kills the owner."

Not only that, but the Washington Post fact-checked Marco Rubio's claim that banning private gun sales would not protect us from spree killers – and found that Rubio was spot on:

Marco Rubio’s claim that no recent mass shootings would have been prevented by gun laws

“None of the major shootings that have occurred in this country over the last few months or years that have outraged us, would gun laws have prevented them.”

— Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), interview on CBS’s “This Morning,” Dec. 4, 2015

A colleague pointed out this statement by Marco Rubio as a possible fact check, suggesting that it was almost certainly incorrect. It posed an interesting challenge, given the reams of data to examine….

The Pinocchio Test
This is certainly a depressing chronicle of death and tragedy. But Rubio’s statement stands up to scrutiny — at least for the recent past, as he framed it. Notably, three of the mass shootings took place in California, which already has strong gun laws including a ban on certain weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Gun-control advocates often point to the experience in other countries that have enacted gun laws that heavily restrict gun ownership; as we have shown, quantitative measures of cross-comparative crime statistics, especially where the crime is not consistently defined (i.e., “mass shooting”), usually end up being apples-to-oranges comparisons. It is possible that some gun-control proposals, such as a ban on large-capacity magazines, would reduce the number of dead in a future shooting, though the evidence for that is heavily disputed. But Rubio was speaking in the past, about specific incidents. He earns a rare Geppetto Checkmark.

When both CNN and the Washington Post agree with the NRA on the efficacy (or lack thereof) of a particular type of gun control, that's saying something.

  1.  I am losing faith and confidence in Trump after the Bump stock ban and his playing games on the border.  He also seems to think we need even more immigrants in our nation if they come in legal.

He also claims to be a good friend of Fat Boy Pritzker and has offered to help Fat Boy address the violence in Chicago. Fat boy wants our guns and to destroy those that believe in the 2A.

I figure anyone that thinks he is friends with Fat Boy cant be trusted; so I don’t trust Trump.

Maybe Trump will protect the 2A for now,  because he wants to be re-elected in 2020.

    We will see.

  2. When the whole political circus is against you. You do have to pick and choose your battles. President Trump has done great things. And would have done even more if the malcontents in Congress would work with him. That includes the Republicans.

  3. H.R. 8 has now passed in the House but will more than likely flop in the senate. if it doesn't President Trump vowed to veto it and they will never get an over ride. Here's the fun part that let's you see what the Dummycrats real motivation is….. every Dummycrat Rep. except 2 voted for this mess. 8 RINO's did too. The Republicans added and amendment to show the Dummycrats true colors. the amendment stated that if any ILLEGAL ALIEN tries to buy a gun the info from that ILLEGAL attempt would be sent to ICE. while about 28 Dummycrats voted yes to this the vast majority voted NO. If this is about "common sense gun safety" why on Earth would those voting yes to the bill vote no to that part of it ? It's obvious this is a registration scheme that has nothing to do with safety. plus they don't want to P.O. their future voters or the liberal traitors who support an illegal invasion and vote Dummycrat. make sure to point this out to the traitor gun grabbers.

  4. If he doesn't make at least significant progress on "THE WALL," he's a one-termer.  If he's a one-termer, the lovely and talented Ann Coulter agrees with me, there will NEVER be another Republican president of the U.S.

However, if he continues to appoint conservatives and FINISHES filling the vacancies, at least he'll have been a better president than Hitlary would have been.

So much nonsense begins and – with the right judges – can END at the court stage.

    1. It's obvious Trump has tried every angle possible to get the wall built and the illegal alien loving Dummycrats have blocked every attempt. Hopefully the people can see this and who the Dummycrats really care about. Getting Constitution following Conservatives appointed as judges was goal # 1 for me and it's going well. Kavanaugh and Gorsuch are great examples.

  5. To all the Anti Trumpers including Coulter, you did not have a choice between Trump and who you thought was ideal in 2016. You had a choice between Trump and Hillary and thank God Trump won.

If there is a choice between Trump and the current crop of Dems running you can bet i will vote for Trump, perhaps not ideal but really come on…….your going to vote for an anti-gun Dem?

    Wake up

  6. As I wrote above the Dummycrats have revealed their hand when they voted for this background check bill. it makes a paper trail for every gun transaction so they can have some kind of giant list of who has what. The real reveal was when they voted NO to notifying ICE when an ILLEGAL tries to buy a gun. what about drug traffickers and MS 13 types ? no ICE notification ? I thought they wanted "common sense gun safety" !!!. I guess they don't want to offend the illegal or the idiots who support them coming in illegally but offending Americans and attacking rights doesn't bother them.

This gun control garbage is NOT the goal of the Dummycrats, it's just one step toward the REAL goal they have planned for us ( YOU !!! ). Did you ever hear the saying… The 2nd Amendment protects the rest of the Amendments ? that right has to go so they can attack the other rights. All previous tyranical regimes before have shown us one thing…. you can't have an armed populous  and a totaltarian society at the same time. Only a total fool would vote for this latest version of the openly socialist / communist anti American Dummycrat party.
