ILGA

by John Boch

At our monthly Guns Save Life meetings this month, I've said that absent a large outpouring of calls from gun owners, pretty much all of these gun control measures will pass and land on the Governor's desk.

Did you miss those?  Don't panic.  We've got a meeting this Thursday in Peoria, and next Tuesday in Rantoul and next Wednesday in Charleston.  We will probably live-stream the Charleston meeting ED report on Facebook.  See the calendar to the right for locations and times.

Anyway, before you wave a white flag, know that the calls do work.

How do I know?  Well, the House Minority Leader Jim Durkin felt the heat from whole lot of phone calls and has, for the time being at least, found his way back into the light.  Yes, not long ago, he advocated for his fellow Republicans that it was okay to vote for Illinois Democrat Leader Michael Madigan's gun control measures.

In fact, he supported the bill to ban magazines over 10 rounds.  Yeah, I know.

Since hearing from a whole lot of people, I've been told that Mr. Durkin has stiffened his resolve and spine, and reconsidered those earlier, ill-considered positions.  The votes to come will tell the story of whether Mr. Jim Durkin's rehabilitation really worked or if he's just blowing smoke against our back sides.  Either way, rest assured we'll be watching him and his votes will have consequences for him.  He had a primary challenger this year that the minority leader easily dispatched.  That said, if he continues to be squishy on guns, I assure you Mr. Durkin will have a very competitive primary season in 2020.  Assuming he doesn't retire.

Rep. Tim Butler joined us in Springfield Monday evening at the Guns Save Life meeting.  His five-minute presentation turned into a half-hour, candid question and answer period.  In a nutshell, he said to expect most of these bills to make it to the Governor's desk.  Again, unless we have a tremendous and overwhelming outpouring of "constituent contacts".  Our best hope, Butler said, is to try to shore up the votes to uphold ("sustain" to use the fancy language from the Capitol Complex) Governor Rauner's vetoes.  (When you miss a meeting, you miss a lot.  Come join us on the first Monday of each month at Scheel's in Springfield!)

Which brings me to the Governor's race.  Governor Rauner is in a bit of a trick bag.  He can do one of three things with these gun bills.  Each comes with its pros and cons, and potential consequences:

  1. He can sign the rest of these gun control bills and make a handful of suburban voters happy.  At the same time, he will have alienated a fair number of conservatives in Illinois.  Alienate the conservatives and they will either not vote in the governor's race, or they may vote for a third party candidate.  Either way, those votes are effectively cast for JB Pritzker – the billionaire who wants to buy the Governor's title and he's not beyond pandering to the poorest minorities in an effort to lock up their votes.
  2. He can approve some of these gun control measures and veto the rest.  This allows him to market himself as a "moderate" to the suburban voters he desperately needs.  While at the same time, veto the most onerous proposals to appeal to the conservatives.  Frankly, I look for him to take this road.  We'll lose bump stocks (no great loss), 18-20-year-olds owning most long guns and standard capacity magazines (a great loss when under 21s can be arrested on a felony charge for having one of mom or dad's extra CCW magazines in the console when using the family car), and three day waiting periods on long guns.  And maybe more.
  3. He can veto everything and appeal to gun owners, but gun owners are only 18+ percent of the population.  Less than that if you count Chicago's illegal aliens who can now register to vote with the new Chicago CityKey cards.

Rauner won 2014's governor's race by 142,000 votes, or four percent.  But he ran against the tremendously unpopular Pat Quinn who pissed off almost everyone under the sun.

Rauner has emulated Quinn's "angering everyone" style, save for gun owners.  Mr. R has irritated the unions to no end, especially the public sector unions.  He's a Republican, so the hard-core Democrats hate him solely for drawing breath.

He's angered conservatives by approving the sanctuary state bill, raising taxes (by 66%!), profligate state spending and debt, the ongoing state taxpayer bailout of Chicago public schools, and state-funded abortions.  Gun owners are really about the only segment of conservatives he hasn't royally angered in the last four years. And frankly, a good share of Illinois' so-called Republicans are Republican in name only who could care less about gun rights.  So long as they can have their sporting clays shotgun, they're happy sipping on wine spritzers while kibbutzing with their fellow Jeb!-loving RINOs.

At the same time, Democrats in Illinois are using gun control to keep the publicity spotlight off an endless number of sexual harassment scandals swirling around many offices of elected Democrats in Illinois.  And the Dems are doing a pretty good job of it, frankly.

"It" referring mainly to their campaign of distraction, but also their prolific sexual harassment complaints, judging by some of the details coming out!

We have our work cut out for us.  Illinois Carry has a nice round-up of what needs doing this week.  Many thanks to their people who put this together (so I didn't have to!).  For that, they deserve kudos a-plenty!

That's all I've got!   Now go beat back the angry mobs!  And don't forget to make your plans to attend the Illinois Gun Owners Lobby Day on Wednesday, April 25th in Springfield.  It's critically important we have a good turnout.

Here's the information from Illinois Carry.

Gun Control Activists Mounting Unprecedented Attack on Your Rights in Illinois!

Phone Calls and Witness Slips Needed

Witness Slip Instructions

Mom’s Demand Action are waging war against the Second Amendment in IL.  They are recruiting members in our communities, they are meeting with our legislators, they are even bringing in their members from out of state to swell their numbers. They have scheduled a meeting with Sen. Tom Cullerton and other senators to persuade them to override Gov. Rauner’s vetoed of SB1657 Gun Dealer Licensing.  They are contacting and meeting with state representatives to persuade them to concur on gun control bills passed by the Senate – the next legislator to be swayed could be yours – make sure your voice is heard louder than the Mom’s Demand Action – CALL YOUR LEGISLATORS NOW – don’t assume just because your legislators have always voted for gun rights that they will continue to vote for you in the coming weeks.  They are under tremendous pressure to cave and some already have!

Every single FOID card holder in Illinois, all 2,276,586 of us, must contact our State Representative and State Senator this next week. Call their district home office and urge them to vote NO on the Dealer Licensing veto override, urge them to vote NO on the Lethal Violence Order Protection concurrence vote, urge them to vote NO on any bills that ban or restrict firearm accessories.

#1 Senate & House – Sustain the SB1657 Veto!

Beginning Tuesday, April 3, call your State Senators and State Representatives in their district offices.  Tell them that as an Illinois resident you support the Governor's veto of SB1657, the dealer licensing bill described by the Chicago Tribune as "government overreach", creating "…a regulatory environment so onerous it would put some shops out of business.".  Ask their support by sustaining the veto despite the enormous pressure coming from groups both within and outside of Illinois.  Remind them that they have been elected to represent Illinoisans, not anti-gun groups from California and New York.

#2 Senate – Oppose SB559

While speaking with your Senator's office, voice your opposition to any bill that denies the accused their guarantee of due process, including SB559 (Lethal Order of Protection Act) which is capable of being passed by the Senate without notice.

#3 House

Oppose HB772
Oppose HB2354
Oppose HB1465
Oppose HB1467
Oppose HB1469

While speaking to your State Representative, impress upon him or her the importance of due process as a cornerstone of American Democracy.   Tell them you oppose bills that don't respect our rights including HB2354 Lethal Order of Protection and, especially, HB772 Lethal Violence Order of Protection.  While both bills can move quickly this latter bill, HB772, can be acted upon with no notice and with no time to prevent it being sent to the Governor's desk!

Also express your opposition to HB1465 Assault Weapon – 21 and HB1467 Bumpstock Ban and Preemption Repeal.  Ask you State Representative to reject the changes made by the Senate on these two bills.  Ask them to vote against HB1469 Magazine & Body Armor Ban, should it come to  a vote.

Contact information for your legislators can be found here.

3 thoughts on “ILLINOIS: Political Update, Contact your legislators, and WITNESS SLIPS!”
  1.  This is my opinion; We need to make at least 3 phone calls every week 1 to our state Rep, 1 to our state senator and 1 to Governor Rauner.

Please understand Rauner is NOT a strong Republican governor, but the alternative is worse.

The Abortion issue. The Supreme Court as ruled that Abortion is the law of the land. In Illinois that issue is Rough There is very little a governor can do on the Abortion issue.

The sanctuary state issue. Illegal immigration is a Federal Jurisdiction issue. Yes Rauner is weak on immigration. The simple facts; immigrants are here and have been here for years. In Illinois a governor has little to NO influence over immigration. Chicago politicians believe the future of the city depends on immigrants to keep their phoney scheme working. The city needs numbers and illegal immigrants give them those numbers

Tax issue. The Democrats over-ride of Rauners veto is the reason we have the tax increase. My State Rep lost his seat over that mess. Rauner wants lower taxes, less regulation and Jobs. We need to keep calling and make sure gun rights are apart of the mix.

So it comes down to gun rights. The alternative to Rauner is worse. So if you must hold your nose and vote Rauner then you  need to do so.

We must also explain to others the issues and the reason and need to VOTE Rauner.

Unless you guys are prepared to fight for your rights then VOTE RAUNER.

Encourage others to vote Rauner. He's not perfect but he has shown he will at least Veto some gun control bills.

  2. Looking at current results, it is very much in our favor. Did see a Gerald Thompson listed as representing the NRA supporting one or more that should be opposed. Could be a fraudulent listing, or someone who doesn't know what he is doing?
