A HERO PASSES: Larry Shurbet, long-time GSL treasurer & leader.

October 30, 2019

Long-time GSL treasurer and devoted member Larry Shurbet passed away Sunday afternoon at Carle in Urbana.

Larry was a dedicated Second Amendment patriot through and through.  In a world where some people just talk the talk, Larry Shurbet walked the walk.  He promoted Guns Save Life and gun rights on a daily basis, both in word and deed.  And he made sure those around him remained safe.

In recent years, some health issues forced him to slow down.  That and helping family in Oklahoma.  Larry was always quick to help others selflessly.

Behind his devotion to family and the Lord, he loved to keep his shooting skills sharp.  He would visit the range on a very regular basis with his local buddies.  Very regularly as in more than once a week in good weather.  A frequency people like me can only dream about.

Here he is playing cards at John Boch’s wedding with Jeff Schwarm, John Naese, Frank Wright, (Larry), Zach Schumer, and Tom Menner.

The world in general and the Land of Lincoln in particular is a more than a little better place thanks to the good works of Larry Shurbet both in his personal interactions with people and his countless hours of work behind the scenes at Guns Save Life.

From the News-Gazette:

THOMASBORO — Larry Shurbet, 70, of Thomasboro passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 27, 2019) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

He was born March 2, 1949, in Greenville, Okla., a son of Eugene and Nelda (Holt) Shurbet. He married Joan Schluter on July 29, 1973, at American Lutheran Church, Rantoul. She survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Katy (Wyatt) Scheiding of Dewey; three grandsons, John, Ethan and Aden Scheiding, all of Dewey; and his mother, Nelda of Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Darnell.

Larry served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He then owned and operated two local home healthcare agencies. After he retired, he lived his life in service to others. He volunteered to drive others, give care to those in need and his favorite time was that spent with his grandsons.

He was a member of American Lutheran Church in Rantoul. He was a fervent member of Guns Save Life where he was a treasurer for many years. He was also involved with the NRA, gun rights and was involved in helping others with their training. He was involved with the Tolono Masonic Lodge. He loved hunting and fishing.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at American Lutheran Church, Rantoul. The Rev. Matt Bahnfleth will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Lux Memorial Chapel, Rantoul, is handling the arrangements.

I never saw Larry w/o a smile on his face and an extended hand for a warm handshake.

When Larry spoke with you, you genuinely knew he cared. Always eager to help in any way and a thoughtful prayer before parting. Another true patriot that we will miss, but I smile for his everlasting company with the Father and his Savior.
