How sweet is this?  The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office offered to let a high-profile “community activist” an opportunity to play the role of a police officer in some force-on-force training and see how they do in life or death situations.  Jarrett Maupin’s his name, and he’s got a big mouth in recent protests after police there shot an unarmed (black) person.

They put him in a scenarios with two people fighting, another with a guy looking into cars and a third of a suspicious person.

How did Mr. Community Organizer do?

Well, he’s quick to resort to pulling his gun.  He shot an unarmed man dead.  He got shot dead by a burglary suspect.  And he can’t keep his finger off the trigger.

Here’s a teaser of the story and the videos from the three scenarios.  Mr. Community Organizer could have done worse, but in the end, we hope he doesn’t carry a gun for self-defense, because he’s pretty close to clueless about the judicious use of deadly force, tactics and gun safety.  But then again, he’s a community organizer, right?  It’s not about facts, it’s about hyperbole and mob rule in his world.

PHOENIX (KSAZ) — We’ve seen protests all across the country after police officers have been accused of shooting people who aren’t armed.

But what would happen if one of those protesters looked at what it’s like to wear a badge, and be put in a life or death situation.

Jarrett Maupin has been very vocal during the recent protests, leading marches on the Phoenix Police headquarters after officers shot an unarmed man who reportedly fought with them.

He agreed to go through a force on force training with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and went through three scenarios where you have to decide to shoot, or not to shoot.

There is good news.  Mr. Maupin did come away educated to a tiny degree.

FOX 10 asked him why he shot the suspect. “Hey, he rushed me… I shot because he was in that zone, I didn’t see him armed, he came clearly to do some harm to my person,” said Maupin. “It’s hard to make that call; it shakes you up.

Emphasis added.

Oh, there’s more:

FOX 10 asked Maupin what his biggest take-away from the exercise will be. “I didn’t understand how important compliance was, but after going through this; yes my attitude has changed, this happens in 10-15 seconds. People need to comply for their own sake,” said Maupin.

We suspect he’s in danger of becoming a pariah among the community activist community with statements like that.

  1. Bravo to whomever thought this up. Let the “activists” walk a block in the shoes of those they are so quick to attack.

You’re right — his fellow activists will disown him for saying people should submit to police authority.

It’s something the “ghetto” community should have been teaching their kids for generations though, but haven’t been.

  2. I disagree. They took a man with no training, no less than lethal force options and no backup, and are trying to say this somehow represents reality. This was set up to fail from the very beginning and biased to make police officers look good. If the police would start honoring their oath to support and defend the constitution, there would be a lot less reasons for people to fear them and to protest their actions.

    1. That’s the way you run FATS-type training. Except for the no-prior-training part, this was done exactly like it’s done in any academy. I’ve run them.

  3. My hat is off to Mr. Maupin. He was offered a chance to put his money where his mouth is, and maybe learn something, and he took it. That’s almost unheard of in his milieu.
Maybe now he will be able to see past the skin colors of the actors in police-involved (or CCW-involved) shootings. And if not, at least MCSO tried.
