HA HA: “Friendly fire” claims 15-year-old Chicago hoodlum on Mother’s Day

Poor 15-year-old Vaughn Holeman.

Once upon a time he was just a good lad, out taking his mom and dad out for Mother’s Day dinner and some ice cream after church when he was struck down in random Chicago violence.

Once upon a time is right.

This story has a perfect ending though.

His grandmother filled in a few “holes” in the story in a Tribune article:

“He went just like his father. He got shot twice,” Corliss Holeman, the boy’s paternal grandmother, said Monday in a telephone interview as she fought back tears. “I don’t believe this. On Mother’s Day.”

Her grandson, Vaughn Holeman, was standing in the 200 block of West 116th Street just before 4 p.m. Sunday when a car drove past and gunfire erupted, according to Chicago police. Vaughn was shot in the chest and under the arm and was pronounced dead a half-hour later at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, authorities said.

…Holeman said her grandson’s father, also named Vaughn Holeman, was killed in the early morning hours of Feb. 7, 2010, while standing outside the New Glass House Lounge in the 7900 block of South Halsted St. in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

Nothing good happens after midnight, especially if you’re a hoodlum in the inner city of Chicago.

But police added the cherry on top to this story.

Police said Vaughn had pointed out the vehicle to the 15-year-old who then fired shots at the car,  and one of the shots struck Holeman, said police.

So little Vaughn was out ‘bangin’, saw a carload of people who somehow offended him or his posse and had his co-conspirator start shootin’ at the car!  (That’s not exactly law-abiding activity on a Sunday afternoon in the big city!)

Unfortunately, nobody in Hollywood told Vaughn that all bullets – both incoming and outgoing – have the right of way.

In the end, one of his fellow thugs plugged another thug and Chicago was down one more Holeman.

On one hand, the senseless loss of life is a tragedy.  On the other hand, if we’re going to lose a life, better it be one criminal accidentally killing another criminal and not a productive member of society.
