September was National Preparedness Month. We spent real pages on it, because a tote bin of chili is not a plan. A plan is a written page: where the family rallies if the interstate is a parking lot, who picks up the kids, an out-of-state number on paper, a radio channel you have already tested, two surface-street routes home. A safe full of rifles does not reunite a family stuck on opposite sides of a closed highway. Ink on paper does.
Gasoline is liquid gold after the pumps go dark and the sign on the glass says no gas. Treat it, date it, keep ten or twenty gallons of it out of the house. At least. A derecho does not send a save-the-date. It arrives, snaps poles, and leaves three counties dark for six to twelve days. The generator buried behind junk in the garage is not preparedness. The one you can reach in the dark, before the sump pump dies, is. Water is the same story. Four to six hours without it and you stop thinking straight. Two days and people drink bad decisions. Filter it, treat it, store it, or boil it. Have a method before the boil order lands or the taps stop flowing.
And stop preparing only for the apocalypse you saw on YouTube. The bad day that actually shows up is a stranger pounding at the door, a chainsaw slip in the yard, a basement taking on water, a hospital garage at midafternoon. A firearm in the safe is inventory. A firearm you can put on a threat in seconds is readiness. An Israeli bandage you can reach one-handed beats a trauma bag that looks like it belongs on a fire truck and lives in a closet. Hospitals are not safe spaces. Parking garages are an all-you-can-rob buffet. The brochure still calls it a campus. Predators call it a menu.
The rest of the issue is the other half of staying off the refugee road.
The new National Firearms Survey is the data the gun-control industry spent years demanding, then hated. Carry is up about 60 percent since 2021. An estimated 26.4 million adults currently own an AR-15 or a similarly styled semiautomatic rifle. A slight majority of gun owners currently own a magazine over ten rounds. Defensive gun uses land around 2.2 million a year. Women and minorities are among the biggest buyers. Stereotypes do not survive contact with the numbers.
Viramontes is argued December 2. The U.S. Solicitor General wants ten minutes at the lectern to tell the Court these bans are unconstitutional. Post Office carry is already real for SAF and FPC members at ordinary post offices. Non-members can join either group and step under the same injunction. Some gun shops are inventing “laws” Springfield never passed and doing the other side’s work at the counter. Vote with your feet. And the Freeport mother who stopped a 13-year-old with a hunting knife in her living room is not done with the aftermath. The system took her gun. The invader’s people came back talking revenge. She is not empty-handed anymore.
