Guns Save Life: From Humble Basement Beginnings to Illinois Powerhouse
Thirty-three years ago, a small group of passionate patriots—fewer than a dozen—gathered in the basement of a restaurant in Urbana for the very first meeting of the organization that would later become Guns Save Life. No fancy headquarters. No big budget. Just everyday Illinoisans who loved God, guns, and liberty, determined to push back against the relentless assault on our Second Amendment rights. What started as a simple monthly get-together has become one of the most effective grassroots gun rights organizations in the state.

Look at a few of these photos from those early days. The laughter, the handshakes, the determined faces. Great people attract great people into their orbit, and that’s exactly what happened.

Dedicated volunteers, sharp shooters, legal minds, and everyday heroes stepped up. Successful people from every walk of life came. They brought energy, ideas, and unwavering commitment. Together, they turned a basement meeting into a movement. A movement that has won cases at the Illinois Supreme Court and flirted with an appearance at the US Supreme Court. Those early patriots would never – could never have dreamed of that successful trajectory of what they started. But while many of them have passed away, their work lives on in modern successes of Guns Save Life. We have no doubt they’re looking down upon us, proud beyond words.

Through three plus decades of challenges—PICA battles, FOID fights, endless legislative attacks, and cultural headwinds—GSL never backed down. We never compromised with those who would strip us of our guns. We never helped the gun grabbers make bad bills better.
We’ve trained thousands, exposed anti-gun hypocrisy, built coalitions, won legislative victories (and blocked plenty of bad bills), and grown our voice in Springfield and beyond. Great times, great adventures, and proven results: membership growth, helping launch successful events (including the early years of IGOLD), and a statewide network that punches well above its weight.

Today, Guns Save Life meets in ten cities across Illinois each month and boasts thousands of active members. From Chicagoland to downstate, we’re stronger, smarter, and more determined than ever. The fight continues, but so does the camaraderie, the marksmanship, the fellowship, and the unyielding defense of our God-given rights.

These old photos remind us where we came from. The mission and the spirit remain the same: armed, informed citizens defending liberty for the next 250 years of America. Thank you to every member, volunteer, and supporter who helped build this powerhouse. The best is yet to come.
