Victory in Springfield: Illinois Gun Owners Dodge Another Round of Radical Gun Control

The 104th General Assembly adjourned its Spring Legislative Session on May 31, and Illinois gun owners have reason to celebrate. Several aggressive gun control measures pushed this spring failed to pass.  Technically, the session ran a few hours into June, but they closed up shop in the end without passing gun control measures.

While the usual suspects in Springfield tried to ram through their anti-gun agenda, these bills ultimately stalled for a variety of reasons — including strong opposition from pro-Second Amendment legislators and effective behind-the-scenes work by grassroots organizations like Guns Save Life and other pro-gun groups who engaged with more moderate Democrats.

Key failures include:

  • The outrageous ammo serialization bill (HB 4414) died in committee. This deeply flawed proposal would have required every round of handgun ammunition manufactured, imported, or sold in Illinois to carry a unique serial number tracked by state police — plus a new tax of up to five cents per round. The patent holder from Palatine would have cashed in handsomely on royalties. Not this time.
  • The de facto Glock ban (HB 4471) also failed to advance. This measure targeted popular semiautomatic pistols with a cruciform trigger bar, threatening one of the most common and reliable handguns in America.
  • Efforts to make restoring gun rights more difficult for law-abiding citizens were blocked.
  • The controversial RIFL Act (HB 3320) — designed to financially punish firearm manufacturers — gained no meaningful traction.

This outcome shows what’s possible when pro-gun voices stay engaged and work both publicly and privately to protect our rights.

That said, the fight is far from over. The same lawmakers will return in the fall for veto session, ready to try again. Complacency is not an option.

We dodged another round this session. Now let’s get trained, stay ready, and remain vigilant.
