The black-on-black violence running rampant in Chicago, Baltimore and other big cities has certainly trickled down to smaller-town USA. One needs to look no farther than the heartland of America – to Champaign-Urbana, IL (C-U) – to see how this pervasive problem of black violence is spreading far beyond the inner cities.
Champaign – Urbana is known to many outside of Illinois as the home of the University of Illinois, a Big Ten school. These twin cities have experienced an “unprecedented” number of shootings and homicides in the past year.
The News-Gazette reports: “In response to eight fatal shootings — and frequent reports of shots fired — over the past year, local law enforcement officials today will unveil details of a new interagency unit designed to combat gun violence.”
It’s getting bad. There are regular headlines in the local paper lamenting the violence.
There have been scores, if not hundreds of reports of shots fired since Ferguson blew up last year. There have been scores of shootings – with injuries – since February. While that’s merely a busy holiday weekend in Chicago, it’s unheard of in the relatively tame hometowns of the Fighting Illini.
Of course, the latest campaign against this violence wouldn’t be complete without a comment from the effectively irrelevant local leader of the NAACP, Patricia Avery:
Avery said ending gun violence is the No. 1 focus of the local NAACP chapter, and she is happy to see the police forces are taking it seriously.
“Until we work to stop the violence, it’s going to be a long hot summer, and we don’t want that,” she said.
Ending this gang violence is the No. 1 focus? Really now. So, Patricia: What exactly has the Champaign County chapter of the NAACP done to reach that goal, aside from spending money and resources fighting against the Constitutional rights of all Illinoisans – including those who you purport to represent?
Yep, the local NAACP spends money and resources supporting Illinois’ primary anti-gun group in their efforts to ban the guns that are the most effective for self-defense. One wonders if the NAACP is working harder to protect the criminal class or the law-abiding class.
Did they changed their name when I wasn’t looking to the “National Association for the Advancement of Criminal Perpetrators”?

Champaign Police Chief Anthony Cobb appeared with Urbana Police Chief Pat Connolly, UI Chief Jeff Christensen, Sheriff Dan Walsh and other law-enforcement representatives in a symbolic show of unity against the latest black-on-black violence running rampant across Champaign-Urbana and Rantoul, as reported by the local paper, the News-Gazette.
I know many of these gents. Champaign Police Chief Anthony Cobb is a really nice guy. I’m not so sure he’s all that pro-gun as his department charges $50 per fingerprint card for non-resident carry licenses last time I checked. I believe that to be a “eff” you rate to get printed – not exactly customer-service oriented.
Pat Connelly and Sheriff Walsh are staunchly pro-gun. I don’t know the UI chief or Rantoul’s guy.
Once again… how about encouraging the law-abiding members of the African-American community gun up to fight the criminal violence of both local wannabe gang-bangers and imports bringing Chicago’s criminal culture with them?
Let the criminal class know the law-abiding residents of these neighborhoods aren’t going to be intimidated into silence in reporting criminal behavior. Let the criminal class’ bad apples know the decent people will shoot them dead if they prey on good people with their violent criminal acts. Working together, the law-abiding decent folks can take care of the bad apples – either through the criminal justice system or through ballistic therapy – to put an end to the “wild west”.
If we are able to get guns in the hands of good people, I know some experienced firearm trainers who would cheerfully provide some high-quality training, free of charge, to those from these high-risk neighborhoods, regardless of race or sex. You get them into gun ownership and we’ll provide the training on the safe and effective use of these firearms for self-defense – and the legal considerations of the justifiable use of deadly force.
Let’s end the useless symbolic acts and make meaningful changes to lessen the criminal violence in every neighborhood in America.
These local chiefs have my number.

Frankly, Ken, if I knew your real name, I’d be half tempted to send some of your comments to your local sheriff so he could consider your public statements in his decision on whether or not to file an objection to issuance of a CCW, or if he wanted to pursue it and you already had a license, a revocation.
Calling for the murder of police officers is, I suppose, protected speech. It’s also dancing close to a criminal act and certainly it is poor judgement. It’s unwelcome here. Keep it up and I’ll dust off the ban hammer.

To John Boch, is there some reason Ken can’t be black balled? I see his hatred and comments as offensive. I also feel that his words reflect poorly on all of us. Thing is, there is a definite pattern to the Demography of the areas where the shots are fired….It ain’t happening in the new subdivisions in Champaign or the gentrified areas around Urbana….
You’ll find that they are nearly all in the north part of the city…generally within a block or two of Bradley ave….Where the Lower income housing is.

Rush Limbaugh likes to call them the NAALCP. And while that might make a good Ruger products gun rights group name (National Association for the Advancement of Ruger LCPs), I damn sure know the NAACP isn’t going to be advocating their members buy guns and learn how to protect themselves from criminal predators (which for them are overwhelmingly black).
The truth is out there.

Some thoughts on the Champaign-Urbana crime situation:
I grew up in southeast Urbana in the 1960s to the early 1980s. My parents stayed there until about 10 years ago, when we moved them out due to the stunning increase in crime there. (They have both since passed away.) One of their elderly neighbors was attacked and robbed by a thug, and seriously injured. Several of my friends from high school also had to move their parents. There have beeen thousands of families in Urbana who have gone through the same thing over the last 15 years with their parents. I know from the high school reunions. Those families BUILT those houses in the 1950s and 1960s on what were farm fields. And they built a nice community where they could raise a family.
If you don’t know, Urbana used to be a wonderful place. UHS football games on Friday nights, Little League, Windsor Swim Club, hanging out at the Dairy Queen after games, walks out in the farm fields to the south. Warm summer nights chasing lightning bugs in the parks. Homecoming, school dances, lots of civic organizations. We went pheasant hunting every year just 10 miles from town.
Downtown Urbana had lots of stores, even a Ward’s or Penny’s I think. Lincoln Square Mall was full of nice shops. They had dances at the Civic Center. It really was like Mayberry.
And the University campus was a relatively quiet, peaceful place where students could walk the Quad or Illini Grove after night classes with no fear or worries. The social sciences faculty were somewhat liberal, but not leftist nuts like they are now. Those in engineering, the physical sciences, and agriculture were mostly conservative. Many were veterans at that time. And the UI didn’t hire former terrorists, like they do now.
There was almost violent crime in town, and if there was, all the men in sight or sound of it would catch the criminal and hold him for the police. (These were take-no-crap WWII and Korean War vets, like my father.) And nearly every father I knew had a revolver or shotgun. My father taught us to shoot at the UI police range south of town, and we could rent 22 single shot rifles at the UI Armory range. (Wonder if it is still there.)
Of course that has all changed. Democrats and the criminals that they enable came to C-U. When the Democrats took over the City Councils in the late 1990s (and the state legislature) everything started to go to crap in Illinois.
In Urbana they instituted a “Human Rights Ordinance” prohibiting “discrimination” in rental housing and employment on the basis of criminal history. In addition, the ordinances prohibit “discrimination” on the basis of “source of income” – which means landlords must also accept federal Section 8 vouchers for rent.
Champaign now has similar, and only slightly less stupid ordinances.
C-U is one of only a handful of leftist towns in the whole country that have such city laws. If you don’t believe me, look it up on the UI Tenant Union website. Don’t know if I can post URLs here, so it is at:

There is a complete table showing all the prohibited classes of “discrimination” in C-U. Most people don’t believe me when I tell them this. It is of course leftist insanity, and one of the primary reasons that criminals have flocked to C-U since about 2000. Many of the once-nice low-income rentals in town have been turned into high-crime slums. And now the City Council idiots blame the landlords for the crime, when they were the cause.
Lots of small and mid-sized employers have left town over the last 15 years because of the employment ordinances. Can you blame them – are you going to be FORCED to hire a convicted rapist and take that potential legal liability? So now there are few middle-income jobs to be had. The blind Democrats have increased property and sales taxes significantly. But they’ll never admit that their leftist policies are causing the crime and general decline in C-U.
The Democrats also transferred several thousand people from Chicago Public Housing to downstate Illinois as part of the Chicago Public Housing Authority’s “Plan for Transformation.” The News-Gazette did a series of articles about this in the early 2000s. Southeast Urbana got several hundred transfers right near Sunnycrest Shopping Center – where I worked as a kid. That neighborhood has now gone to hell.
All of this has been a criminal crime wave disaster for downstate Illinois towns – C-U, Springfield, Peoria, Decatur, and Danville. Even smaller towns like Rantoul, Charleston and Mattoon are getting the influx now. The former Chicago Public Housing Complexes (many torn down) were some of the highest crime neighborhoods in Chicago, and the crime has come with those residents. Although they are supposed to be screened for felony convictions, their extended families and friends who live with them are not. And Section 8 voucher users have no such restrictions. Section 8 destroys neighboorhoods – it is happening all over the country. I’ve seen it first hand.
The criminals also see the University of Illinois as a prime area for their crimes – students and faculty are regularly assaulted, robbed, and raped. The UI police send regular crime e-mail alerts to students.
So due to the Democrats, there has been a mass migration of criminals to C-U and downstate Illinois. You all now have a significant population of professional criminals and unemployed dirtbag hustlers, probably at least five percent of your population. They like downstate Illinois because the liberal Democrat prosecutors let them off with probation, and strong law enforcement is discouraged by the Democrat politicians as “profiling” or discrimination. Unarmed Illinois liberals are also easy prey for them.
I want you to know that Champagin-Urbana was once wonderful. Democrats have destroyed it. As long as they stay in power and the city ordinances encouraging criminals are in place, your crime is going to increase.
I salute you all for staying and fighting the good fight against the criminals and for your self-defense rights. Maybe the election of a Republican governor is a good sign of people in Illiois finally getting fed up with the crime and the Democrats.
I’m sorry but I had to get out for my sanity. I felt like Jimmy Stewart in “It’s a Wonderful Life” seeing the alternative reality of Bedford Falls. It was just too sad to remember what it had been when good people were running our government.
