State Department Demands Takedown Of 3D-Printable Gun Files For Possible Export Control Violations

The sixteen parts of Defense Distributed’s 3D-printable gun, the Liberator.

(Forbes) – The battle for control of dangerous digital shapes may have just begun.

On Thursday, Defense Distributed founder Cody Wilson received a letter from the State Department Office of Defense Trade Controls Compliance demanding that he take down the online blueprints for the 3D-printable “Liberator” handgun that his group released Monday, along with nine other 3D-printable firearms components hosted on the group’s website Defcad.org, while it reviews the files for compliance with export control laws for weapons known as the International Traffic in Arms Regulations, or ITAR. By uploading the weapons files to the Internet and allowing them to be downloaded abroad, the letter implies Wilson’s high-tech gun group may have violated those export controls.

“Until the Department provides Defense Distributed with final [commodity jurisdiction] determinations, Defense Distributed should treat the above technical data as ITAR-controlled,” reads the letter, referring to a list of ten CAD files hosted on Defcad that include the 3D-printable gun, silencers, sights and other pieces. “This means that all data should be removed from public acces immediately. Defense Distributed should review the remainder of the data made public on its website to determine whether any other data may be similarly controlled and proceed according to ITAR requirements.”

  1. This should open some people’s eyes. KNOWLEGE confiscated absent due process. Not guns, not weapons, IDEAS just snatched.

And politicians wonder why Americans have bought 70 million above the board firearms in the last few years? And loyalists really wonder why Americans are arming up? This is an example of MULTIPLE rights being ignored and tyrants just acting with impunity.

And loyalists actually think they are immune? Seriously?

    1. “The Truth is out there…”

Kudos to all the folks who turned an idea and a philosophy into a concrete reality…the printable gun.

Self defense is the God-given right of all creatures…and the bad guys will always have guns (until they have phasers, disruptors, blasters, light-sabers or something equally compact and effective replaces the gun).

Progress is a narrow, one-way street. You can park, but you can’t turn around.

  2. Like getting pee out of a pool.
This little zip gun has these politicians terrified? Good!
Legislating bad behavior by banning objects never has worked.
    Print on!
