(Blue Star Fam) – Walker Greentree wants to be a SEAL when he grows up. Or a ninja. It depends on the day. He’s turning 7 in October so that explains a lot.  But he’s smart as a whip.  He comes from a military family and he’s a member of the elite MilKidz Club.

One afternoon while playing with a friend in the yard, the young Greentree was scolded by his mother.  “Be quiet like a SEAL,” said Vivian Greentree.  His friend immediately replied – as one would expect from a 7-year old. “Ninjas are quieter than SEALS.” And thus, a monumental argument began.  WHO is quieter? Ninjas or SEALS?  SEALS or Ninjas?

So in times like these, the younger Greentree wanted to ask the experts.   He wrote to Admiral William H. McRaven, a United States Navy admiral, and Commander, U.S. Special Operations Command. He’s a big deal.  And what happened next will go down in history and for Walker Greentree, it will be a moment he will never forget.

Read the whole thing.  It’s cute.

He wrote the Admiral and got quite a surprise in return.

The Admiral wrote him a letter, included a challenge coin, and gave him the answer.

It was a good one too!

The answer:  “I think ninjas are probably quieter than SEALs, but we are better swimmers, and also better with guns and blowing things up.”

The admiral didn’t mention:  Don’t bring a sword to a gunfight.

  1. Fantastic. SEALS are great. But beings I’m Army, hope he looks into being a US Army Ranger. To those Navy, just kidding.

  2. Good for Walker! At my age, I probably would have gotten a different response, if any response at all! Kudos to Adm. McRaven. What a blessing that he would take the time to respond to such a request. As the world faces such political, economical and terrorist turmoil, it is nice to see that our brass takes the time to remember what the missions are really all about.
    Thank you, Adm. McRaven!
