Leave it up to County County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and her cadre of gun-hating, self-defense eschewing underlings to charge a Chicago man on crutches following a home invasion where the homeowner used his gun to thwart a pair of gang-banger home intruders.
Two thugs broke in, but only one broke out. The one that got away was yelling gang slogans. The homeowner, on crutches, and his 18-year-old daughter were unharmed.
Police declined to arrest the man, but charges were later brought by prosecutors after the investigation determined the man’s FOID card had expired.

A 44-year-old man on crutches fatally shot one of two intruders who came charging at him Friday morning in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, according to police.
Mario Viramontes, 31, was declared dead on the scene in 2000 block of West 21st Street at 9:22 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office….
He did not see anyone at first, so he returned to his bedroom to get his gun. When he went back to the rear apartment, he saw two intruders “charging towards” him so he shot at them, according to the report.
Both burglars stopped, turned around and ran back towards the back door, but one of them collapsed and fell to the floor.
Two men were seen running away and yelling gang slogans and the 44-year-old told his daughter to call 911.
Responding officers found the back door of the rear apartment had been pried with a metal shovel and found shell casings on the kitchen floor, the report said.
During the course of the investigation, police learned the 44-year-old homeowner’s Firearm Owners Identification card was expired and he was charged with one count of possessing a firearm with an expired FOID card, a misdemeanor, police said.
Viramontes lived in the 2100 block of West Cermak Road, about two blocks from the break-in, officials said. An autopsy is scheduled for later today.
And Chicagoans wonder why their quality of life sucks.
Foid cards should be done away with. I am curious if the shooter had applied for a new foid card and not got it due to state police not doing their job?

As stupid as this is, I can predict a few things.

This poor man will spend every dime he has defending himself.

He will then move out of the city.
I’d offer to loan him a gun if he needed one after he gets his FOID renewed…

I’d provide him arms,as a matter of right, in the absence of a renewed FOID because
as demonstrated now, disregarding the unconstitutional FOID requirement already saved his life and that of his daughters’.
Refusing to do so in the absence of a FOID very well could cost him his life – and for what? To claim “law abiding” status? When he’s dead in reprisal. That, in my opinion, is alin to acting like Anita herself.
Process over substance is deadly.
A question (which will no doubt go unanswered and unaddressed) is just how it is that these stories never contain the tidbits about the NRA jumping in to defend the Second Amendment…..oh wait…. Cuz the NRA doesn’t jump in to do so….. Funny how that is huh?
This story demonstrates the difficulty of being an Illinois gun owner. As we warn attendees at GSL Defense Training courses, the state will enforce its regulations against gun owners no matter what the circumstances and sometimes even when there is no actual violation. The complicated nature of the Concealed Carry Act will only increase this problem. Know the law and do your best to stay out of their crosshairs.
Thanks to this GSL training, my wife and I are well enough versed that we hope to avoid any pitfalls should we have a couple of gang-bangers come through our door at oh-dark-hundred.
We live outside of Chicago though, so it’s unlikely, but we’re ready for the same reason we have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.

This story is a perfect example of why I hate the FOID card and call for its “REPEAL”
When are people going to grow up and realize we don’t need permission from government to own a gun.
