The Associated Press is reporting the “ammo tax” in Cook County now includes a $25 tax on each gun sold.
Why not a $25 tax on casting a ballot as well?
CHICAGO — As Chicago struggles to quell gang violence that has contributed to a jump in homicides, a top elected official wants to tax the sale of every bullet and firearm — an effort even she acknowledges could spark a legal challenge.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will submit a budget proposal Thursday that calls for a tax of a nickel for each bullet and $25 for each firearm sold in the nation’s second-largest county, which encompasses Chicago.
The only winners in this fiasco are the gun and ammo dealers in DuPage, Will, Lake and outlying counties. While I have no first hand knowledge, I would venture that Cabelas multi-million dollar operation in Hoffman Estates would take issue with this proposal. I say it goes nowhere.
What needs taxation in C(r)ook County is what we have plenty of; stupidity and bad habits. Why not print their own lotto tickets? County run cigarette/liquor stores only run during business hours? I know suburbs that charge a 50.00 ‘booking fee’ to every mope that goes into the lockup. If you have the 50 bucks on you its TAKEN. Even if you got zero from some, imagine the cash generated on those that deserve to pay, and oftentimes pay nothing else towards the system.
Why not tax the criminals? Every time they get arrested, there should be a $1000.00 fine levied on them before they are released. Think of the revenue.. Besides, what makes these morons think (if they are thinking) that this will stop crime or even help pay for fighting crime? What a bunch of morons! Happy I live down state!
CHICAGO is the last place in the world that I would want to live. They can keep their pro tax agenda on firearms and ammo. I for one will never give them a cent of my money or visit that dump. If Obama came from there, that city is really out of wack.
