Good news first: We’ve raised a substantial portion of the funding required for our two Amicus Curiae briefs supporting Viramontes v. Cook County at the U.S. Supreme Court.
The remaining challenge: We still need a few thousand dollars more. We’re close—very close. And the timeline has given us another couple of weeks to finish the job.
This case will decide what firearms the government may ban and how far officials can go in burdening law-abiding owners. Most observers expect the Court to strike down the bans. Our role is to help ensure that victory is as broad and durable as possible.
The plaintiffs’ primary briefs face strict length limits. Strong amicus briefs fill the gap—driving home the arguments that close the door on backdoor bans dressed up as “reasonable regulations”: special licenses, registration schemes, ownership permits, punitive fees, mandatory insurance, forced training courses, and similar obstacles. We are also pressing for a clear right to repair so Americans can keep their firearms functional without needing government permission for every part.
Colorado is already implementing exactly these kinds of hurdles for popular semiautomatic rifles, shotguns, and pistols. Illinois will be next if the Supreme Court fails to draw a firm line.

The opposition will not sit idle. Well-funded groups will flood the Court with polished briefs designed to narrow any ruling. We cannot match their checkbooks dollar-for-dollar—but we have beaten them before with clarity of purpose, careful legal work, and the steady support of people who refuse to surrender their rights.
We are nearly there. A few thousand dollars more will put these briefs over the finish line. One more push from those who understand what is at stake.
The future of the Second Amendment in Illinois—and far beyond—depends on getting this right. Let’s finish strong.
