Hey! Ammunition prices are dropping!

I want to let you all know I am out there every week wandering through numerous gun shops and big retailers in several states and also diligently sort through a daily deluge of email advertisements-all while constantly looking for guns and ammo bargains or trends. This practice, to be honest, is done mostly to benefit me… but you- the readers are #2 !

But rest assured I’m out there looking and you don’t have to if you just don’t have the time!

In the last week, I have noticed distinct changes in the price of “normal” ammunition dropping among both local retail and online sellers.

Even primers are back in stock with retailers and down to mid-range prices around $60 vs $100 or more per 1000. In some cases ammo is half the price it was 6 months ago. The premium ammo is still quite expensive, but ordinary practice ammo is back to what I consider good prices.

Consider, during the COVID shortages, regular 9mm shot up from about $10-$12 a box of 50 to $22-$30 a box of 50. Same ammo. Same box, but the market supply pinched down, and demand drove the prices up.

Thankfully, the lowered price for some decent commercial ammo late this year is back down to pre-COVID shortages and even “Pre-Hillary Clinton running for President fear driven hording prices.” Even the loss of some American powder makers and China and Ukraine controlled gunpowder/primer ingredients seem to have eased up- with plenty of supply and now cheaper prices.

Why are they dropping now? Well, without getting too scientific, or into statistically comparative market surveys and international politics, I can now firmly announce without hesitation- the reason ammunition prices are dropping is: the Beaver Moon, Yep this week’s supermoon. That is what is driving the ammo prices.

Why not the moon? It’s as good a reason as any you might see on nationwide news or put up by “expert” talking heads phoning it in via Zoom.

Bottom lining it, do I care why it’s dropping? Not in the least.

Do I want more ammunition at cheap prices? Absolutely.

Here is my considered financial advice (RESPONSIBLE ADULT WARNING: remember kids, your Ole Uncle Mike don’t even balance his own checkbook-but I always have money to buy more bullets!) Go stock up now while things are cheaper! You will then ostensibly…have more. Quantitatively that is better than less. Check the math on that if you wish! There will be a shortage coming- there always is.

How much ammo should you have? A standard of measure are the Sunday night news stories where some miscreant is caught with two or three guns in his basement and a “cache” of bullets often as many as one or two hundred at a time! We call that “almost empty” or rookie numbers…

Scoping some ads this morning here are some examples I found.

    1. It is widely believed you cannot have too much ammunition- unless you are in the water or actively on fire.
