Warren Drake found an inexpensive, yet effective solution to getting big hands securely on a small pistol. Small pistols, like the Kel-Tec, baby Glocks and the now-discontinued Standard Arms SA-9 are not the easiest things to get a firm grip on, particularly when shooting hot loads. Drake bought a set of commercial, adhesive grip panels for his baby Glock. He liked those so much, he wanted to install some on of his other small frame pistols however grips weren’t available for all of them, so he had to improvise.
After extensive searching he found some material for skateboards that is very similar to the Glock grip panel material. He found the material, of all places, at “Mr. Rags” at Market Place Mall. Mr. Rags sells “hip-hop” clothing and similar items – and for $5, they have a strip of this material about the size of a skateboard.
Drake provided strips at all of the tables at the meeting for those present to sample. He said to use alcohol to remove any oils on the metal or plastic surfaces to get the best adhesion before applying.
He brought a couple of his small pistols with the material applied and it did make a substantial improvement to getting a secure grip on the pistol.
The down side to applying this material is that it will abrade material it rubs against – including clothing if carried in a holster. Retired FBI Special Agent Frank Wright offered a solution. He had his tailor sew in a panel of nylon “pack cloth” to the inside of his suits to protect against abrasion and recommended this to others who carry.
The abrasive grip material does not make extensive target pratice particularly enjoyable either.
