Folks used to say that even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Camille Paglia has almost found that magical time in her piece in Time Magazine online today.

It’s titled, “The Modern Campus Cannot Comprehend Evil” and she pretty much delivers the truth to those who read Time online.  You probably missed it, so we’re delivering it here.

She begins with “Young women today do not understand the fragility of civilization and the constant nearness of savage nature.”  Frankly, if Camille had addressed this to young people in general and not just pandered to college coeds, it would have been a home run op-ed.

It’s not just young women who don’t understand just how thin the veneer of civilization is – it’s both sexes.

Some additional highlights:

…Wildly overblown claims about an epidemic of sexual assaults on American campuses are obscuring the true danger to young women, too often distracted by cellphones or iPods in public places: the ancient sex crime of abduction and murder.

Isn’t that the truth.  Abduction, forcible rape and/or murder.  Or just vicious violence.  Or maybe property crimes if they are lucky.

Too many young middle-class women, raised far from the urban streets, seem to expect adult life to be an extension of their comfortable, overprotected homes. But the world remains a wilderness. The price of women’s modern freedoms is personal responsibility for vigilance and self-defense.

Again, it’s not just young women, but young men as well – especially “pajama” boys.

Also notable in the piece is the mention of “personal responsibility for vigilance and self-defense”.  When was the last time you read Time Magazine putting those words into a sentence?

…Misled by the naive optimism and “You go, girl!” boosterism of their upbringing, young women do not see the animal eyes glowing at them in the dark. They assume that bared flesh and sexy clothes are just a fashion statement containing no messages that might be misread and twisted by a psychotic. They do not understand the fragility of civilization and the constant nearness of savage nature.

It’s not just sex crimes against women, but also crimes of violence against men.

The last line though is priceless.  …”They do not understand the fragility of civilization and the constant nearness of savage nature.

This is why the prudent person learns situational awareness and self-defense skills, up to and including the use of firearms to defend against when the fragility of civilization breaks down and the savage nature appears.

  1. I know a couple of the libs at my office think I’m paranoid for spending the money to get my carry license.

Of course, bad things always happen to other people in other places in their minds.

  2. Why in the world would you tell co-workers that you have a CCL? It’s none of their business.

It’s a miracle they didn’t turn you in to management or call the police on you. I hope you still have your job.
