The three rules of safety are a thing for a reason.
1. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. Never point a gun at anything you’re not willing to destroy.
-
- This is the most important rule.
- A “safe direction” is one where an accidental discharge will not cause injury or damage.
- This is the most important rule.
2. Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot
- When holding a gun, rest your finger alongside the frame, outside the trigger guard.
- Do not touch the trigger until your sights are on target and you are prepared to fire.
- This rule helps prevent accidental discharges due to a startled reaction or a slip.
3. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use
- A gun should only be loaded when you are at the shooting range or otherwise ready to use it.
- When handling a gun for cleaning or storage, ensure it is completely unloaded and the action is open.
- You must be sure it is unloaded, even if you believe it to be so. When in doubt, have a qualified person check it.
You can follow the rules religiously, or you can be a big dummy and shoot yourself, someone else, or make yourself into an instant internet meme.
