Senator Don Harmon and Representative Kathleen Willis have little to do with their time other than work to impose Chicago-style gun control upon all residents of the state of Illinois.  Because, with 179 homicides and carjackings rampant, generations of Chicago-style strict gun control have worked so well to make Chicago a crime-free liberal utopia, right?

The bills we're watching closely include the Governor's amendatory veto of HB-1468.  The Dems are planning to attempt an over-ride, perhaps as soon as Friday (probably Tuesday-ish in reality).  You can bet my peer at the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence is encouraging her tiny band of gun control advocates to call their Senators and Reps to urge an over-ride.  Even though the bill would do absolutely nothing to solve violent crime in Rahm's paradise or anywhere else.

The Governor's Amendatory Veto…  My spidey senses tell me this one is dead.  There's no way enough Democrats are going to go against Michael Madigan to give the governor a victory just a few months before this fall's election. The ISRA cheered the governor's AV language, and I quote (from Capitolfax):

“While not everything we had hoped for, we applaud the Governor for taking a thoughtful first step in tackling the issue of violence that torments our state,” said Richard Pearson, Executive Director of the Illinois State Rifle Association.

We at GSL applaud the governor for the veto and that's it.  As for the AV language, we like love some of it and at the same time, we have serious concerns about some of it.  And so does the NRA.  We will just leave it at that.

The other bill we're watching is the new Gun Retailer Licensing bill.  It's now a "certification" bill, not a licensing bill.  What's not to like?  Plenty:

* Gun rationing for law abiding gun owners.  You can only conduct 9 firearms transfers per year.  Buy a gun, that counts as one.  Sell a gun, that's another.  Trade guns?  That counts as two.  It's more restrictive than a couple of states' "one gun a month" rationing laws.  Criminals?  They don't give a damn about rationing.

* And end of private gun sales.  ALL gun sales will have to go through a dealer.

* Enhancing penalties for failure to keep records for ten years for all firearms sold.  Lose your records for two or more, lose your gun rights forever with a felony conviction.

* Burdensome regulatory requirements on gun dealers.  Extensive, expensive and burdensome.

* A new provision to work around federal law that restricts public dissemination of gun trace data.  Harmon's new law would release that to the public.  Nevermind that if someone broke into my house and stole 30 guns and they were recovered, Harmon would later use those 30 gun traces against those gun stores as evidence of the guns they sold ending up "in the hands of criminals".  Yeah, even though they were stolen from my home.  Or yours.

*  FFLs would have their businesses available for unannounced "inspections" by every law enforcement agency, state, county and local.  Yeah, each can get one bite of the apple, but if you have a half-dozen agencies or more come to inspect a business – say "Chuck's Gun Shop" in Riverdale as he's a perennial favorite of the anti-gunners, that's a lot of lost revenue and increased headaches for a store already scrupulously following the law.

* The bill sets ambiguous security requirements for dealers.  What could possibly go wrong with open-ended, but undefined security requirements?

The bill number is SB-337.

Note how RINO Republican Chris Nybo is a co-sponsor of this bill.  He's the guy who claims he was "mistakenly" added as a primary co-sponsor of another anti-gun bill earlier this year to allow municipalities to ban black rifles.  And the ISRA even put out a special email announcement to take  "Senator Nybo at his word that this was an honest mistake and he had no intention of sponsoring or supporting a bill to allow local gun bans."

SB2314 Statement

There is an email going around that says Senator Chris Nybo is a sponsor of SB2314, the bill to allow local bans on semi-automatic firearms.   Senator Nybo made a mistake when seeking to sponsor another bill and was added to SB2314 for the briefest period of time.  Upon realizing the mistake, he promptly took his name off of the bill.

In the hustle and bustle that is the Capitol, numbers get transposed or jotted down wrong.  We take Senator Nybo at his word that this was an honest mistake and he had no intention of sponsoring or supporting a bill to allow local gun bans.

We look forward to continue working with Senator Nybo to find solutions that will address the criminal misuse of firearms.

Richard Pearson
ISRA Executive Director

Now Nybo is sponsoring a bill that would impose all manner of gun control upon Illinois residents.  Nybo is a lying weasel who is no better than a violent thug on the street…  they'll tell you what they think you want to hear, but every fiber of their being will do what they want to do.

Enough about that.

In short, it's time to melt some phone lines.  No, you don't have to do it all yourself.  However, if you act as a big, fluffy snowflake (no relation to the delicate snowflakes that permeate some aspects of our society today), you can become part of an avalanche of calls that melt thse phones down.

Friday is the next session date for both the House and Senate.

Call today, even though enough of the Chicago Dems may skip town early for a long weekend that the votes won't be there to pass anything.  Definitely call AGAIN next Tuesday.

Call your Representative and tell them to:

*  vote "NO" on over-riding the Governor's Veto of HB-1468.
*  vote "NO" on SB-337.

Call your senator too.  Urge them to vote "NO" on over-riding the Governor's Veto of HB-1468.

Call 217 782-2000 if you don't already have your State Rep and State Senator in your contacts list.

This goes double if your elected officials are Democrats OR are suburban Republicans.

Now get on it!
