The irony: The Google Street View image for the murder block shows a Chicago Police cruiser behind the Google car.  Photo courtesy Google.

One of Tio Hardiman’s former “interrupters” or ganster-mediators turned up dead earlier this week.  Just a hazard of being a bad guy hanging out in the wrong place.

And in the irony of all ironies, when searching Googlemaps for an image of the neighborhood, low and behold there was a Chicago Police cruiser pictured.  It would seem there was not a police squad there when Marlon Lee was doing whatever it was he was doing when he took one in the back.

Perhaps Marlon Lee should have continued to be a violence “interrupter” instead of a bullet sponge.  Clearly CeaseFire’s message of ‘take all the guns away’ fell upon deaf ears in the criminal community – or that message hadn’t made it to the person who shot Marlon.

Former CeaseFire worker fatally shot in Woodlawn

A former employee of the CeaseFire violence prevention program was fatally shot today in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side, officials said.

Marlon Lee, 36, was driving when his car came to rest on the 6100 block of South Woodlawn Avenue at about 10 a.m., police said. The Cook County medical Examiner’s office said he was shot on the 1200 block of East 65th Street.

Lee of Chicago Heights, was found shot in the back and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:45 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Tio Hardiman, director of CeaseFire Illinois, said …”He was really passionate about the work he was doing for us,” said Hardiman. “It’s unfortunate that this happened to him, losing his life. He was one of our own.”

  1. This hate-filled article is written in extremely poor taste. Bottom line: a human being has lost his life due to violence. I’m sure he would much rather be alive.

If you disagree with CeaseFire, Hardiman, and their politics that’s fine. If your ideology encompasses the right to bear arms that’s fine.

However, you can make your points without being disrespectful of human life. It makes you look less humane.

  2. I can’t work up any sympathy or compassion for predators who victimize innocent people.
