GSL’s President Dale Lock lost his son Andrew last Friday.

Celebration of Life services will be Thursday morning-ish in Farmington, IL.  Here’s the obituary.

Andrew Lock passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 10, 2022 at the age of 43, at his home in Annandale, Virginia. Andrew was born to Dale M. And Rebecca Wier Lock on March 1, 1979, in Canton, Illinois. He graduated from Porta High School in 1997, having participated in marching band for six years. Andrew continued his musical performance throughout his academic years. He began studying engineering at  Lincolnland Community College and was involved with the solar car project and Sunrayce 1999.

Andrew earned his master’s and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2005 and 2007 respectively.  His Ph.D. thesis was supervised by Professor Iswar Puri and was titled “Extinction of fuel and air stream diluted partially premixed flames for fire safety”. Andrew did his postdoctoral work at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and was hired as a staff member.  While at NIST, he managed research projects, developed standards, mentored students, wrote peer-reviewed papers, and ran numerous experiments. He was awarded a NIST bronze medal for his work on thermal imaging cameras leading to the development of NFPA 1801.  Since 2010, he has been working as a manager of the fire safety laboratory in the Consumer Product Safety Commission. He is also the senior Labview developer, administers licenses, and regularly consults other engineers on data acquisition.

Andrew met his wife Evgeniya Hristova Vassilieva during a student exchange study abroad program at the Technical University of Hamburg Harburg (TUHH) in Hamburg, Germany. They celebrated their platinum 20th anniversary on May 11th, 2022. Andrew and Evgeniya have three wonderful children – John Ralph 16, Victoria Vassilena 13, and Rebecca Daria 10. Besides his wife and children, Andrew is survived by his parents,  mother-in-law, brother, sister,  brother-in-law, grandfather, nine aunts and uncles, twenty-one cousins, and numerous next-generation cousins who grieve his passing.

The celebration of Life services will be held at the Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in Springfield Virginia and at Providence Chapel,  Farmington, Illinois with burial at Providence Chapel Coal Creek Cemetery.

  1. The correct GSL address is: 18012 East County Road 24, Farmington, Il. The church there is closed and is owned by the cemetery. But the rest room and the A/C still work. A meal will be served after the burial, and all are invited. Church is barely handicap accessible. There is wooden ramp up to the front door. IF unable to walk down the stairs to the meal, you can eat upstairs.

Andrew and I went to the 2019 March for Gun rights in Richmond, Virginia. If you recall, the blue governor at the time declared a state of emergency with all those heavily armed citizens coming to the capitol. There were airplanes, snipers and heavy (and friendly) law enforcement presence on scene. There was one arrest of a lady who would not take her mask off. I can testify that is was wickedly cold that day and the high buildings funneled the winds through there. At the next election, VA changed from very anti-gun to pretty pro-gun, and the situation is much improved there now. Andrew and Evgeniya’s children attend Fairfax County schools and had some interesting stories there too.

If you wish to honor my son, please donate to GSL and I will match you up to a total of $500, then you are on your own. Andrew’s John (16) is shooting up my cheap Remington .22 LR ammo with a 10/22 and GSG 1911. Andrew did not have enough time to teach him shooting very much. Parents and grandparents, take you kids shooting before it is too late.

Many GSL members have texted, emailed, and called. I value these contacts as if they were brass and lead, rather than gold or silver.

I plan to finish my term as President in 2022. I will still help at Sangamon Region, and will support GSL any way I can. Understandably, I may be in Virginia for weeks or months this year. Anybody want a cat?

  2. My bad, it the Virginia event was in January of 2020. There are three signs of old age, loss of memory and…..
