(GunsSaveLife.com) – Do you want to foster responsibility, respect, conscientiousness, self-discipline, reliability, humility, honesty, thoughtfulness in your child or grandchild?

Then teach them to shoot.

Adolescents who grow up learning about shooting, hunting, and outdoor activities under the tutelage and supervision of responsible adult role models are more likely to turn out as the type of adults that are sober, careful, and think before they act.

That’s not just us saying that; Boys who own legal firearms have much lower rates of delinquency and drug use than non-owners of guns, according to the US Department of Justice in a 1995 study.  (1)

Guns Save Life takes the education of children in the safe and legal use of guns seriously.  We have partnered with many organizations over the years to promote gun safety, marksmanship, and other activities for youth that make them better and safer as adults.

We work with the nation’s oldest and longest-running NRA Youth Camp, held annually at Darnall’s in Bloomington, and the young people who are learning (and as they get older, teaching) the safe and accurate shooting of all types of firearms, under the supervision and instruction of experts in each field.  The grandfather of the young lady pictured at the top of this post commented on our website:

GSLYouth2015-10

“I was so pleased to see my grandkid’s target in the story, but even happier to see the smile on her face. GSL is doing great work for all of us in the shooting community.  I look forward to seeing all of you next year.”

Appleseed
The Appleseed marksmanship and heritage clinics are another venue where children and adults can not only learn guns safety and marksmanship, and their heritage as Americans, but they can also learn to teach others these things as well.  GSL promotes Appleseed not just with valuable promotion but by paying the range fees and providing the manpower to make things happen.

Cross Trail Outfitters has held two youth camps this summer, offering youth, many of which have no male role models in their lives, the opportunity to learn about hunting, shooting, and all things outdoors.

GSL regularly partners with other community organizations to promote education and instruction for youth.  In recent months, we have provided funds to purchase shotguns for a Woodford County program, and bows for an archery program in a Champaign County school.  Watch GunNews for more examples.

This could not happen without you, the readers of GunNews and members of Guns Save Life.  If you’re a member, thank you!  If you’re not a member, please become one, and you’ll be supporting not only this publication, but a host of opportunities to teach the next generation the truth about guns, and set them on the path to a lifetime of enjoyment.

  1. You know, I’ve been reading about all these worthwhile things Guns Save Life is doing, along with its members.

I was at ISRA’s website this morning. They have some press release about a bill submitted in Congress by a couple of rabidly anti-gunners that will never pass. They had a legislative update from an ISRA lobbyist. I mused that they must be paying her by the word. My eyes kind of glazed over midway through the second long paragraph.

I stopped at Illinois Carry too. A couple of new posts or threads or whatever they call them about some news stories and someone advertising “last chance” for a CCW class.

It reinforced why I visit GSL several times a week when I can. ***Guns Save Life is DOING things, in addition to talking about things.***

GSL has meetings in all these cities, the HOOAH stuff, the suppressor shoot, this story about the kids camp from a month or two ago, this opportunity to get free ammo for taking someone out to the range, news stories, how to keep yourself safe, product reviews and more.

Great job, John, and the many volunteers at GSL who work tirelessly for our cause.

    Keep up the great work.

  2. Sam, plenty of us have noticed the same.

I used to go to Illinois Carry a lot. Over the last year or two, a lot of people I respect left or were driven away. Heck, even Todd Vandermyde no longer posts.

GSL is more active than all the other groups in Illinois put together.

  4. I was coaxed into helping the youth camp a few years ago. I was not that enthusiastic before I arrived.

    It was a blast!

I had a great time helping some wonderful kids and a great cause. If one was jaded about the trajectory of the next generation, come see these kids, it will give you a new perspective. Now I do my very best to be there every year, heat, sweat, no matter.

Please support this effort with your kids and your time. There’s a job for everyone.
