The Chicago Tribune gleefully printed the headline news today, April 23rd:  "Chicago tourism numbers hit record high, topping 55 million in 2017".  The Trib cited numbers provided by "city officials".  And the dutiful mainstream media did exactly zero work verifying them.  Just as the mainstream media shies away from writing about the horrific crime that manifests itself in Rahm's paradise – and very frequently the racial description of criminal suspects.

Here's the Tribune's story:

Chicago tourism numbers hit record high, topping 55 million in 2017

A record 55.2 million people traveled to Chicago in 2017, according to the city’s initial estimates, which reaches a goal set by Mayor Rahm Emanuel — two years ahead of schedule.

In early 2014, Emanuel said he wanted to attract 55 million annual visitors by the year 2020; the city had hosted 48.3 million people the previous year. Despite a dip in business-related visits last year, Chicago eclipsed the mark in 2017, thanks to an upswing in leisure tourism.

Hotel occupancy — which is how both leisure and business travel are estimated — saw a 7.6 percent year-over-year surge during peak tourist season, June to September. Overall, Chicago hotels saw 3.3 percent growth in 2017.

The mayor is expected to formally announce the new tourism figures Sunday at the Chicago Boat, RV & Sail Show at McCormick Place.

Really?  55 million sounds like a lot.

Insider Magazine, in December 2017, reported on the twenty most popular tourist destinations in the world.  Chicago didn't make the top ten.  In fact, the Windy City didn't make the list at all.  On the other hand, New York City came in at 8th, with 13.1 million visitors.

Insider put Hong Kong as the most visited city in the world with 25.7M visitors in '17.  CNN also reports Hong Kong as the most visited city with 26 million visitors.

So Rahm Emanuel and his city staff pull a 55.2 million visitor number out of their butts – and then the Chicago Tribune dutifully reports it as if it were gospel?  55.2 million stands as twice the widely accepted number of tourists for the largest tourist destination in the world!  Does anyone wonder why nobody trusts the mainstream media?

Meanwhile, the same august publication reported on an 8-mile-long crime spree by a pair of armed robbers and they can't seem to find even the most minimalist description of the suspects.  Or more likely they willfully ignore it.

Second City Cop had the hilarious fisking of the story:

Eight Mile Crime Spree

  • Police are looking for armed robbery suspects who carjacked at least two people, hit a pedestrian in Lincoln Park and led police on a chase through several city neighborhoods that ended with a crash near Humboldt Park on Saturday morning.

Who did it?
  • Police have recovered two of the cars that were taken in the attacks and are trying to find the third, which is a green 2000 Honda Accord with damaged Wisconsin plates of 218SPG, said Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson on Saturday afternoon at an unrelated news conference in the Loop.

Police have some “good leads” on the identities of the suspects, who are possibly juveniles, Johnson said.

Great – who were they?
  • It started Saturday morning with a pair of attempted carjackings by the gunmen, who were behind the wheel of a stolen silver or gray Chrysler van on the Near North Side, police said.

Okay….descriptions?
  • In the first, the victim did not make out a police report and nothing was taken, but about 9:30 a.m., the two robbers pulled up to another person in the 1400 block of North Dayton Avenue, according to police. They tried to carjack the victim but only grabbed cash before driving away in the van.

The suspects then drove 3 miles north to the Lakeview neighborhood, where they stole a Volkswagen at gunpoint in the 1300 block of West Waveland Avenue and left the van.

For god's sake, who the [bleep] are we looking for?
  • A short time later, a tow truck driver flagged down a patrol officer after spotting the stolen Volkswagen, and police gave chase. The pursuit continued about 2 miles south to Fullerton Avenue and Halsted Street in Lincoln Park, where the Volkswagen hit and seriously injured a 23-year-old pedestrian, police said.

Chicago police ended the chase, and the victim, a man who suffered a broken arm, a broken shoulder and a concussion, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition had stabilized.

For the love of…..
  • No arrests have been made, and police did not immediately have a description of the robbers.

Riiiight. Not a single description from anyone involved, robbed, maimed. Does anyone believe this bullshi[*]t any more?

Note: In the first, the victim did not make out a police report and nothing was taken.

Who in the world doesn't file a police report after being the subject of an attempted carjacking?

I filed a police report on tire vandalism.  But then again, I live in Mayberry, not Murder City USA.

  1. Technically everyone who flies into a Chitcago airport just to catch a connecting flight is a visitor, so in that regard it probabky is accurate.

    Typical Liberal lies.

    1. Oh what the heck, lets include every truck driver and other motorists that barely skirt the city on I-294 every day.

  2. 55 million, divided by 365, is 150,685 people. 150K people  a day.  A bears home game is maybe 50K, and thats only a few sundays in the fall.  While indeed there are tourists that go to chicago, Tiny Dancers' claim of 55 Mil is wildly exaggerated. If there were 150K tourists in town, youd know it. If each spent 20 bucks, you'd have over a billion in commerce.  I recognize its difficult to pin down every tourist dollar, but this goof is nowhere near close.

  3. Chiraq pols frequently forget where the decimal point belongs when dealing with dollars or population numbers.  It tends to move in the direction of their favor.
